An Airbnb Listing Will Be Transformed By Legendary Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama

Earlier this year, the Art Institute of Chicago in partnership with Airbnb recreated one of Vincent Van Gogh’s infamous paintings as a rentable bedroom.  Now, the latest edition on Airbnb will be a mind-blowing makeover of one lucky Londoner’s Airbnb listing by one of the world’s most eccentric and respected artists, Yayoi Kusama.

The self-proclaimed ‘Modern Alice in Wonderland,’ popularly known as The High Priestess of Polka Dots, Kusama’s dreamy installations have repeatedly caught the wonder of viewers worldwide. Be it her retrospective ‘Infinite Obsession,’ which The Huffington Post reports was seen by over two million people in South America, or the iconic ‘Fireflies on the Water’ installation.

“In a ground-breaking collaboration with the Tate Modern, we’re offering one London host the chance to have their bedroom re-designed by the Polka-Dot Princess herself,” states Airbnb’s website regarding the newly announced competition.

“Yayoi’s vibrant and innovative style will completely transform the winner’s room, temporarily turning their living space into an immersive installation to be listed on Airbnb, allowing a once-in-a-lifetime stay for future guests,” they added.

The competition is open to owners of a listed private room or entire home in the Greater London area. On the Tate Museum website applicants need to explain in 50-300 words why their listed space should be chosen for complete dynamic transformation by the beloved Japanese artist.

Entries are invited till May 10, and not only will the winner’s space be remodelled but they will also be receiving tickets to a party celebrating the opening of the new Tate Modern which as per Airbnb includes a new ten-storey building designed by Herzog & de Meuron along with a new display of modern and contemporary art from across the globe.

A room full of neon stickers, a polka-dotted paradise or a dreamscape with twinkling lights and mirrors, we can’t wait to see what the visionary Kusama’s quirky mind creates this time. For more information regarding the competition you can check out the posting on Airbnb’s website, and the Tate Museum site for entries.
