World Photography Day: Iconic Images Of India In Black & White
"When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you capture their souls." - Ted Grant.
Superficially, India may be layered and folded deep into some sort of polychromatic chaos but it’s nothing if not a distraction. Under all the vibrancy, we’re still a country that thrives in shades of grey; rarely allowing a black and white rhetoric to dictate our realities. Perhaps this is why the poignancy, the real depth of the country, can only rarely be felt by the hundreds of ‘colourful India’ cliches that make it into photographic halls of fame. Sometimes, the only way to capture the soul of a place, a person, a thing even, is to allow the monochrome to wash over it and let the diversions melt away.
