Beat The Heat: Unique Indian Treks Worth Taking

Summer is finally upon us, which means that we’re all looking for new getaways and fascinating trips to escape the heat and humidity here. Indians are generally known for their laziness, which is why trekking isn’t considered to be a huge deal in India.

However, we have something that might just change your mind. Here’s a list of the most unique trekking places in India, which, apart from being a great exercising option, have that something extra that might make your trip that much more worthwhile.

Whether you want to sweat it out, observe the marvels of nature, or simply enjoy the cold, sub-zero temperatures – it’s all in there. So take a look at some of the most breathtaking and unique trekking options this country has to offer.

I. Markha Valley Trek

At 17,400 feet, the Markha Valley Trek takes place at one of the world’s highest inhabited plateaus. The trekking experience is amplified by the presence of benign nomadic tribes and their herds of yak. In addition to that, one can also walk through the pastel canyons decorated with multi-hued prayer flags, for which it has been dubbed the “Little Tibet”.

II. Chadar Trek

The word “chadar” means blanket and as is the case here, it is indeed a blanket of ice. Called the Alaska of India, this trek in Leh is no mean feat, and goes on for about 20 days. The breathtaking views ensure that your camera roll gets depleted before you know it, and one also gets the chance to get in touch with their spiritual side by visiting various monasteries along the way. Perhaps the most compelling factor of the trek is that one gets to walk alongside and occasionally on the frozen Zanskar valley river with cold water gushing just a few inches below your feet.

III. Chembra Peak

The Chembra Peak is one that is absolutely perfect for a one day trekking trip with your better half. The surreal blanket of lush green trees and its location almost always ensure that it has the perfect weather conditions. However, the highlight of the trek is a heart shaped lake right in the middle of the ascent. Perfect for a Valentine’s Day trip, don’t you think?

IV. Valley of flowers

While the name might seem like a slight exaggeration, in truth, it really isn’t. The valley is indeed covered under a blanket of flowers – 62 different species of colourful, rare flowers that will leave you enchanted. To add to that, there are also various endangered animal species on offer, like the Asiatic black bear, red fox, blue sheep and the musk deer. Unfortunately, the recent Uttrakhand Floods damaged a major chunk of the Valley but trekking options do still exist.

V. Skeleton Lake

Beautiful temples? Check. Small, beautiful lakes? Check. One of the lakes, with a depth of about two metres, holding frozen bodies and skeletal remains? Check. Yes, although the trek offers much more than just the lake, at 16,000 feet, people definitely go to witness the remains of the ancient catastrophe that no one seems to be able to explain. Eerie, sinister and mysterious, this trek is for the marginally morbid and ghoulish adventurers.

VI. Dayara Bugal

The Dayara Bugal is almost a replica of the Chembra peaks. A vast expanse of lush green meadow makes you marvel in awe. The only difference is that instead of a heart-shaped lake, it has a natural lake in the middle that reflects the oak trees.

VII. Tadiyandomal

Now you might look at the trek itself and think it is nothing special, but once you reach the peak – all your worries are put to rest. It offers a breathtaking view of various other smaller peaks that look like gigantic Hershey’s kisses, while giving you a feeling that you’re floating amongst the clouds.

VIII. Kudremukh

Although the trek is normal and nothing special, it’s the name that makes is fascinating. Kudre mukh literally means “the horse’s face”, and this is because of a picturesque view of the side of the mountain that resembles a horse’s face. Once you climb the mountain, you can easily camp there overnight amidst the clouds. Carrying a lot of water is recommended, though, as there are no natural water bodies up there.

IX. Dzongri Trek

The Dzongri trek is tailor made for you to get in touch with your spiritual side. You will encounter numerous Monasteries along the way, all of which have calm, benign Monks in them. You can also enjoy walking through various Tea Plantations and also visit the local Zoo. The most incredible aspect of this trip, however, is the “Peace Pagoda”, a Buddhist monument that claims to inspire peace.

X. Rhododendron Sanctuary

To trek on a rocky, barren mountain or through thick ice is a task. But if you want an easy, pleasant hike, this is your stop. Ablaze with brilliant Rhododendron blossoms, the gentle hike explores the beautiful nature and remote regions of the Himalaya along the borders of Nepal, which occasionally offering a glimpse of rare birds and animals which adds to the whole experience.

XI. Goechela Trek

Another trek suitable for couple, this one is actually called the romantic trek due to the long walks through various serene forests that offer nothing but peace and calm. Beautiful sights like frozen lakes, meadows and the startling blue brooks only make you fall in love with the place and your loved ones, over and over again.

XII. Rajgad Trek

If history is your thing, the Rajgad Trek is perfect for you. Although it is quite a steep climb, the fort of Rajgad at the peak, which was home to Shivaji for 26 years, is worth the trip itself. The fort has a lot of historical relevance. A lot of Shivaji’s battles were planned from there, his family lived there and all his kids were born there as well. The most morbidly fascinating fact, though, is that Afzhal Khan’s head was, at some point, put on display in the fort.

XIII. Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

Possibly the most beautiful trek on the list, the Kashmire Great Lakes Trek is nature’s gift to humanity. While trekking, you will encounter seven beautiful, sparkling, icy, natural lakes that make you feel like you’re gaping at a supremely talented artists painting. Heaven on earth? Indeed.
