This Stunning Cliff House In Kerala Is Every Minimalist’s Dream

Chowara, a fishing village 30 minutes from Thiruvananthapuram, in Kerala plays host to this stunning house perched at the edge of a cliff, 200 ft above a stretch of green adjoining the Arabian sea coast. Designed by architects Sandeep Khosla and Amaresh Anand of Khosla Associates, the house never lets you forget the 180 degree panorama of Arabian sea; the dramatic wall and asymmetrical sloping roof make the house intelligently permeable to the elements in the tropical heat of God’s own country, bringing the warm sea breezes, air and the sky in with only half of the 1,400 sqm of built area actually defined by four walls.

Commissioned for a client in London as a holiday home, local artisans and materials were used to construct this beauty, a plot of land kissing the Arabian coastline, chosen in empathy of the active fishing community found here. A skewed, sheer concrete wall supporting the single lightweight triangulated canopy roof is perhaps its most pronounced feature as it lunges out towards the horizon. The internal and external finishes constitute concrete, polished cement and rough slate juxtaposed against warm slated timber and natural local kota stone. The external and internal finishes are polished cement, concrete and rough slate juxtaposed against warm slatted timber and natural local kota stone and furniture and accessories are sparingly arranged, so that they never once take away from their picturesque natural surroundings.
