The Orange House Marries Modern Aesthetics With An Indian Touch
Ebuild

This house in Bangalore hits all the rights spots - it’s vibrant, bright, sunny and appropriately reflects the exuberant personality of the client, Manoviraj Khosla, a famous Indian fashion designer. The house acquired it’s form from a liberal L shaped configuration, that leads out into a massive garden and swimming pool. The house is built facing a northeastern lung space, while the garden and the pool are the two most distinct features. The living and dining areas have been cordoned off from the outdoors by verandahs on both the north and eastern sides of the structure. The house has been built keeping in mind the climate and the context. The Managlore tiled terracotta sloping roofs are reminiscent of houses indigenous to this region. The tiles and slopes can withstand heavy monsoon rains and can also protect the house from heat in the summer. The east and northern facades of the house are transparent, letting in the morning light, while the western and southern sides are more opaque to combat the aggressive setting sun. The materials utilised in building this house are also context sensitive. Other than the use of terracotta roofing tiles, the flooring is an amalgamation of yellow Jaisalmer sandstone, rough Kota stone and wood. Moreover, the under layers of the verandah roofs are clad in a hand woven banana fibre matting.
