Even though we live in an age of technology, there’s nothing that can take your breath away quite like the splendour of nature. In the bustling metros we rarely give a thought to what wonders lie outside the city limits and in doing so we miss out on some truly breathtaking vistas. In the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh lies one of the country’s most often ignored sights, India’s own grand canyon- Gandikota.
A stellar gorge formed by the river Pennar that cuts through the Erramala hills, Gandikota is a natural architecture marvel. Here, you spend your time gazing at the spell binding assemblage of rocks, cut and layered in a very unique way and even dare to climb them. If successful , you would be greeted with spectacular views of the canyons that only leave way for the Penna river, lazily meandering below.
Made into a sand fort in 1123 by Kapa Raja, a subordinate of Ahavamalla Someswara I, the Western Chalukyan king of Kalyana, Gandikota’s history is as complex as its structure. The massive Gandikota fort sits atop the gorge. Built in the 13th century in red sandstone, one can take a lovely walk through time observing its intricate carvings, understanding its colourful history and unearthing hundreds of stories encapsulated in its ruins. There’s also an old 13th century temple, the Raghunathswamy temple which is an architectural treasure with a
‘complex network of pillars and hallways’. The temple remains a mystery as there are no idols placed here.
Perhaps the most fascinating thing to do here is go caving in the Belum caves which greatly resembles the Antelope caves in Arizona and are significant in terms of its geology, archaeology and architecture.
End your day at the Rayalacheruvu Lake, believed to have been established by emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya using water from the Pennar river. Watch the sun go down, and the evening twilight cast an eerie shadow over the gorges. Gandikota at night is just another mesmerizing sight to behold.
Gandikota is a relatively unexplored area, unspoilt by the flock of tourists. To let it flourish in all its natural charm, we encourage responsible tourism.
Gandikota is accesible by road from Hyderabad, Bangalore and Vizag and makes for a splendid drive. The nearest airport is Tirupati (220kms). There are not many stay options available at Gandikota. A few government guest houses and budget hotels are your best options.
