The Essential Mumbai Pizza Guide: 9 Places For You To Try

American novelist Katherine Howe captured much of our adoration toward a certain food when, in her book The Appearance of Annie Van Sinderen (2015), she said, “Pizza is good medicine for disappointment.”

We refrain from arguing with that statement –– it garners all our support.

Something about a piping-hot, cheesy, indulgent pizza is so comforting –– emotional support on a difficult day, fulfilling when you crave it, and an overall warm hug, the (not so) humble pizza remains the go-to food for many across the world. It’s amazing the kinds of feelings some bread, cheese, sauce and toppings can bring about –– sometimes, the best part of a day could be the pizza we devoured!

Keeping in mind that we at Homegrown ourselves cannot resist the idea of biting into a pizza, we thought to share with our Mumbai-based readers a few of the places that we turn to when we opt for a cheat day.

I. Cecconi’s

Where: Soho House Mumbai, Juhu Tara Road

When: Monday to Friday: 12 PM - 10 PM; Saturday and Sunday: 11 AM - 10 PM

A modern-day contemporary space for some brilliant Italian food, Cecconi’s is a front runner for our favourite. With a perfect view and food equally that good, this place gives us our dose of authentically prepared pizza that truly leaves us wanting more.

We suggest the wood-fired wild mushroom pizza, with a indulgent shaving of black truffle if you are feeling extravagant. The balance of flavours coupled with a perfect crust and the balmy Arabian sea make for a delicious combination.

II. Greedy Man’s Pizzeria

Where: Linking Road, Bandra West; Veera Desai Road, Andheri; Shankar Rao Naram Path, Lower Parel; Hiranandani Gardens, Powai

When: 12:30 PM - 4 PM, 5 PM - 3 AM

We turn to Greedy Man’s when we are in the mood for that perfectly thin crust, accurate sauce-to-cheese ratio and impeccable toppings. With wholly Naples-inspired pizzas, Greedy Man’s is our guilty pleasure. They also cater well to the vegetarian audience –– do not worry, the non-vegetarian options are lip-smacking, too.

Roasted Garlic and Diavola are our top meat-free preferences, with Jerk Chicken and Spicy Pepperoni for our meat options.

III. Hundo Pizza

Where: Online orders and delivery only

When: 11:30 AM - 2:30 AM (5:30 PM - 2:30 AM on Mondays)

Hundo bridged a gap we never realised existed –– that of a delivery-only, high quality pizza kitchen that parcels happiness in a box. The digital first recent entrants amongst homegrown artisanal pizza brands, Hundo has whetted our appetites.

You can now also build your own vegan pizza –– you can choose your vegan base, and build it up entirely with your choice of sauce and toppings, with vegan cheese!

The classic Margarita di Bufala with their signature San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh Buffalo Mozzarella drizzled with olive oil is our staple and Chorizo and Pepperoni when we are feeling that extra bit indulgent.

III. Franceso’s Pizzeria

Where: Linking Road, Bandra West; Chinoy Mansion, Kemps Corner; ARK Mall, 4 Bungalows (Colaba and Lower Parel outlets are temporarily closed)

When: 11 AM - 11 PM/12 AM/3 AM

Customisable pizza –– yes, you read that right. In fact, we don’t even mean in terms of sauces and toppings, we mean the shape and size of the crust –– the whole shebang. Great flavours and amusing presentation does the trick for Francesco’s and makes them one of our top choices in Mumbai.

Be sure to try their Davide Pizza, Pizza Bianca and Fiamma Pizza.

IV. Joey’s Pizza

Where: Azad Nagar, Andheri West; Chincholi Bunder Road, Malad West

When: 11 AM - 12 AM

For a hearty and wholesome meal, head to Joey’s –– we assure you, you will not be disappointed. You will find Joey’s Pizza loyalists scattered around the city, and with good reason. With their affordable yet filling pizzas, the restaurant is one you will turn to when in doubt.

We suggest their Spicy Chicken Keema Garlic Bread to begin with, followed by their specials, Meat Feast, Pineapple Pizza (controversial, we know) and Paneer Makhni Pizza.

V. Pizza Express

Where: Apollo Bandar, Colaba

When: 11:30 AM - 11:30 PM (Deliveries and takeaways available till 12:45 AM)

Pizza Express impresses us with their authentic flavours and perfectly made pizzas –– with crusts not too thick, perfectly blended sauce and an option of toppings that we can only appreciate, there is not much to falter here. A single bite of their pizza will inform you of their quality, and will most definitely leave you wanting more.

Do try their Arrabiata, Soho 65, Pollo Forza and Padana –– we are almost sure you will be instant fans. If you’re up for some extra calories and a whole lot of satisfaction, their cheesecake is the perfect way to finish off your meal.

VI. Queen Margherita’s Pizzeria

Where: Chincholi Bunder Road, Malad West

When: 12 PM - 11 PM

The brainchild of Pratik Agarwal, Queen Margherita is your go-to solution for gourmet pizza. The slightly burnt edges of that perfect crust will tell you just how moreish their pizzas are, and their sauce, cheese and toppings are the perfect co-stars. Our words and their pictures do not do the food enough justice, so the only way is to try them out!

They also deliver DIY-pizza kits with all necessary components, and you can get a hands-on experience at home as you build it up.

Killer Bee, Kimchi Roni and Puttanesca would be our recommendations, but in all honesty, all their options are just as enticing.

Where: Hill Road, Bandra West

When: 12 PM - 11 PM

If you’re not one to be confused by a vast list of pizza options, and in fact, enjoy picking from a large lot, Ray’s is meant for you. With their (highly) impressive range of flavours of pizza, they also have some vegan preparations. They’ve got a good mix of Indian, continental and authentic Italian flavours, so rest assured, all your visits may call for a new type of pizza.

We enjoy their Truffle Oil and Wild Mushroom Special, Prosciutto Mirtilli Rossi é Caprino and Evil Hot.
