As the world is moving towards a more sustainable future, it is vital to reanalyse our own wardrobes and the staples that are often repurchased at a faster rate. Fast fashion cycles promote overconsumption through the use of cheap and non durable fabrics that lead the consumers to purchasing the same item over and over again whilst the growing landfills keep clogging our environment. This vicious cycle of production also exploits water resources and contaminates our surroundings with synthetic byproducts.

Which is why it is becoming increasingly important to prioritise brands that are conscious about their impact and employ greener production methods to produce regular items such as denim. A New York-based brand named DL1961 is pioneering the sustainable denim movement by revolutionising the manufacturing process. Their aim is to change the way denim is produced by reducing its impact on the planet. While an average pair of jeans uses 1500 gallons of water while the average pair of DL1961 jeans uses less than 10 gallons.

Beyond such conscious practices, they also use organic and certified cotton in addition to clean dyes. DL1961 as a brand has its roots in South Asia and started out as a family business. Sarah Ahmed, the co-founder of the innovative venture has vertically integrated manufacturing processes in her family's Karachi-based factory. This is precisely why the brand has seamlessly managed to incorporate greener practices as compared to its Western counterparts. The factory is a fully-solar powered plant that not only tracks the exact usage of water, energy and dyes but also recycles over 98 percent of the water they use.

Engaging a wide audience in their journey, DL1961 has managed to modernise denim for a newer generation and in the process has made the production practises more sustainable for the future. You can explore their collections here.
