Top 10 Most Haunted Places Around India & The Real Stories Behind Them

Remember the days when you were a kid, and you were convinced that a black hand was going to creep out form under your bed courtesy zee horror show. And remember howthat progressed to slightly more mature horror films in your preteens forcing you to gallop faster than a horse from the bathroom to your bed. (Yes, gallop, because your pyjamas would fall down to your ankles, propelling you to run on all fours) Well, it’s time to relive some of that. Mostly because we’re a little sadistic but partly because this might just be the best travel guide for all the horror freaks out there.
Without further ado, here’s a list of 10 of the most haunted places this country has to offer.

I. Bhangarh, Rajasthan

The abandoned town of Bhangarh located in Rajasthan is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the world. Constructed in 1613, the town was abandoned soon after because of a curse laid upon it by a “tantrik.” The place has been a deserted ever since. The place is uninhabited, and has a gloomy aura about it. The word on the street (in an abandoned town, weirdly enough) is that anyone who goes into Bhangarh after sunset, never returns. This is taken so seriously, that even the Archaeological Survey of India has put up a sign, prohibiting entry after dark.

II. D’souza Chawl, Mahim, Mumbai

Legend has it that a woman, while drawing water from a well, accidentally fell to her death.  Ever since, the woman has been seen wandering around the well. While some say she’s completely harmless, others claim that it is dangerous to walk around here at night. Either way, it is advised to stay away from the well.

III. Dumas Beach, Gujrat

As beautiful as the coastline is, the Dumas beach of Gujrat is known to keep tourists and locals away because of its spookiness. The local Hindus in the area, as per tradition, are known to burn the bodies of their dead ones on the beach. People claim to hear noises and strange voices. Dogs bark till they run out of breath. Tourists have been known to never return after a long walk on the beach. Spooky? You bet.

IV. Svoy Hotel, Mussuoorie

One of the spookiest places in the world, the Svoy hotel is home to a lady that goes by the name of “Garnet”. She was poisoned to death, and has ever since been looking for her murderer. When she encounters someone, she looks at the person with absolutely no expression on her face. No smile. No frown. No joy, no anger, just a blank ghostly face. Mussuoorie? More like Mussu-eerie.

V. GP Block, Meerut

Although lesser known, the GP block is one of the scariest places on this list. People would often see four friends sit in a corner and play cards while consuming alcohol. Now while this may seem like a normal sight, it isn’t, because these “friends” were actually ghosts. People have hence stopped going there completely, leaving GP Block completely abandoned.

VI. Delhi Cant

Ah, the famous lady dressed in white. One of the most haunted places in Delhi, the Delhi Cant is famous for the notorious ghost of lady who asks drivers for a lift. Clad in a white sari, the ghost is known to glide or run at the same speed as the car if you don’t stop and give her a lift. People suggest that this could be because the lady was a hitchhiker when she was alive. Who said Delhi can’t have ghosts? Apparently, Delhi Can.

VII. Dow Hill, Kurseong, West Bengal
A forest in Bengal, the Dow hill has been home to many deaths and murders. Apparently, the ghosts haunt the forest and villagers even claim to have seen a young headless boy walking around the forest. Now how they figured out he was young if he didn’t have a face is questionable indeed, but it would still be a wise call to give this place a miss.

VIII. Raj Kiran Hotel, Lonavla

The second hotel to feature on the list, the Raj Kiran Hotel has actually been verified by paranormal experts. There is one particular room in the hotel that is supposedly haunted. Guests staying in the hotel say they have seen a blue light emerge from the foot of the bed, which is generally followed by “an invisible force” pulling their sheets off them. Sinister indeed.

IX. Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad

Lights. Camera. Fiction? Built on the war grounds on the Nazim Sultans, the Ramoji Film City has had its fair share of, well, controversies. The lights fall down, injuring the lightmen. Women’s clothes tear off on their own. Scriptures appear in mirrors out of nowhere. Right out of a Ramsey productions movie, the Ramoji Film City definitely has something out of the ordinary.

X. Brij Raj Bhavan Palace, Rajasthan

The 175 year old palace was converted into a hotel in 1980. However, stories of it being haunted have emerged ever since. The ghost in question is Major Burton, who, along with his sons, was killed by Indian soldiers. The ghost then found the palace to be a comfortable place to settle down for his afterlife, and while he is known to not harm anyone, there have been reports of the ghost scaring people and even slapping them, occasionally. Me casa es no su casa, then, eh Major?
