You Can Rent This Private Island In Sri Lanka For A Dream Vacation

There’s been a point in everyone’s life that they wished they could be transported to their own magical island. There are some necessities for a fairy tale island however; namely sun, sea, sand, a stunning view and of course, absolute exclusivity. A mere 200 yards off the coast of Sri Lanka with nothing between it and the South Pole lies the fantasy destination you’ve been dreaming of, Taprobane Island.

Originally called Galduwa (Rock Island) this 2½ acre expanse is the only privately owned Sri Lankan island and a true tropical fantasy. In the 1920s, the island was renamed after the Old Greek word for Sri Lanka by its most well-renowned owner, the self-titled Count de Mauny-Talvande. He built the only residence on the isle, an expansive five-bedroom neo-palladian villa that has over the years played host to aristocrats, artists and even royalty.

To reach the island you can opt for a cushy sedan chair on elephant back or brave the shallows and wade across the short distance to your final destination but what awaits is nothing short of palatial. The 5 airy bedrooms can accommodate up to 10 people and with the regal four poster beds and ornate colonial furniture it’s guaranteed to be one of the most luxurious nights of your life. If you want to wallow in the beauty of your surroundings, step out onto the balconies which are attached to every room, take a dip in the infinity pool or wander for a while through the tropical garden.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a fantasy island if you had to take care of yourself, a staff of five are ready to cater to your every whim from the minute you hit the sand to the moment you’re on your way home and for between 1 - 2 lakh rupees per night (for the whole island) this could all be yours for the taking. So whenever city life is getting a little too much, head out to this tiny slice of paradise and experience a slow, sun-soaked day beside the clear waters of the Indian Ocean.
