How ISRO’s Three New Satellites Will Change India’s Internet Forever

The exasperating days of ‘Page Loading…’ might soon be over, and you have the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to thank for it. An era of high speed internet will be upon us in 18 months with ISRO launching the GSAT-11, GSAT-19 and GSAT-20.

The launch of these satellites is expected to advance not just the way smartphones are used, but also bring forth the next generation of television, which will be viewed through the internet. Use of these satellites would increase internet speed because they are high-thoroughput satellites, meaning their range of beam frequencies is wider than that of the usual satellites, which use single beams. The GSAT-19 is expected to use, 8 beams and the GSAT-11 will use 16 beams.

“The next big launch will be GSAT-19 in June… With this launch, we will begin a new age of communication satellites. It is also the beginning of high-throughput satellites (in India),” said Tapan Misra, director of Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre (SAC), a department of ISRO involved in developing satellite payloads. “The effective data rate of GSAT satellites is one gigabyte per second. GSAT-19 will be able to transfer data at four gigabyte per second, thus making it equivalent to four satellites,” he added.

January 2018 is expected to see the launch of the GSAT-11, which is expected to have a range of 14GB per second, and GSAT-20 is scheduled to be launched towards the end of 2018.

The successful launch of these satellites could mark a milestone in the development of smart cities in India, and could redefine what technology can achieve.
