Indulge Your Sweet Tooth With 7 Of Mumbai’s Most Decadent Chocolate Cakes

Chocolate Ganache Cake
Chocolate Ganache CakeAnn-Marie's

Flaky cronuts, messy but delicious ice cream sandwiches, cute mini-everything, and waffles with more toppings than you can count on both hands—desserts are constantly evolving and honestly? We aren’t complaining. But when you see your Facebook feed flooded with How-To videos by Tasty, Buzzfeed and whoever else creates those darn food videos that make everything look way easier than it actually is, it’s hard to resist temptation. Baking yourself a cake is unlikely, especially when you want all that chocolate in your mouth right about now.

That’s where we come in! We took one for the team and put together a list of simple chocolate cakes (okay, that’s a lie, they’re all pure decadence) for those of you who are itching to get your cake on. Compiling this was pure torture, considering we were reminded of how good each cake was as each word was typed.

Feel free to thank us later by sending Homegrown one or two of these delicious beauts, anytime.

I. Chocolate Ganache Cake at Ann Marie’s

Where: Ann Marie is a home baker, so you’ll want to order online first.

After much argument, it was decided we would do this list alphabetically so as to avoid favouritism. In the end, it all worked out because our favourite ended up right on top anyway. If ever there was a physical representation of tall, dark and handsome, this would be it. This is the cake you’d get for someone you really, really love, mostly because when you get it for them, it means you can’t eat all of it yourself. If that isn’t true love, we don’t know what is.

Cost: Depends on your specifics, but trust us. It’s definitely worth every penny.

II. Blackout at Bombay Salad and Co.

Where: 340, Near Mini Punjab Hotel, 16th Rd, Bandra West

While we didn’t expect a salad bar to end up on our list of best chocolate cakes, we also didn’t expect to fall in love with their sinfully good piece of cake. Though, considering how rich and gooey this cake can get, we don’t know if it qualifies as cake anymore. And the best part? You don’t have to feel a 100% guilty about eating it. (Maybe 70% guilty, it’s pretty darn heavy.)

Cost: INR 220 for a slice of gluten-free heaven.

III. Orange Chocolate Cake at Cafe Zoe

Where: Mathuradas Mills Compound, NM Joshi Marg, Lower Parel

By now, you should know that Cafe Zoe is a standard addition to nearly every list of ours. They’ve never let us down, and praise be, their Orange Chocolate cake is their testament to our faith in them. We’d question orange in chocolate cake, but to be honest, the zest just amplifies all that chocolatey goodness—don’t question it.

Cost: INR 230 for a little zing in your life.

IV. Gooey Double Chocolate Fudge Cake at Country Of Origin

Where: Pearl Haven, 86 A, Chapel Road Junction, Reclamation, Bandra West

Warm this baby up and you’ve got the perfect melt-in-your-mouth moment in store. Warning: It’ll be hard to talk for a while after, simply because you’ll be in a state of nirvana like no other. So we’d suggest clearing all your plans for the day. This is the cake you want to order in, sit back with, and just Netflix and Chill as the rain patters away outside.

Cost: INR 180 for a slice, OR you can take the plunge and get a whole round at INR 1650.

V. Chocolate Cake at Mavs Cakes & Bakes

Where: Shop No 2, Firdous Building, Waroda Road, Hill Road, Bandra West

When you order for a slice from Mavs, prepare yourself. Not only is that slice way more than what you’d expect, there’s also a generous bit of chocolate ganache on the side. It’s gooey, it’s rich, and it’s what you’re getting to ‘treat yourself’. No more questions, please.

Cost: For this quality and quantity, take all our money at INR 200!

VI. Double Chocolate Cake with French Nougat at Poetry by Love And Cheesecake

Where: Pali Darshan, Junction of 16th & 33rd road, Linking Road, Bandra West

We don’t know how they do it, but everything on their menu is magic. From their chicken & waffles, to their sandwiches, we thought they couldn’t outdo themselves—until we got our hands on this. This is a more ‘premium’ take on chocolate cake BUT with all the right frills.

Cost: A round of this comes at INR 1250 but if a single slice isn’t available, go for the Devil’s Desire, another in-house favourite.

VII. Dense Chocolate Loaf at Theobroma’s

Where: Shop 11/B, Ground Floor, Gagandari Society, Carter Road, Bandra West

Oh, Theo. A true-blue consistent contributor to our increasing waistlines. Their chocolate cake may just be the simplest one on this entire list, but it certainly has seen the walls of the Homegrown office (and tummy) more often than any other contender. The ideal tea-cake (lunch cake, dinner cake, brunch cake, breakfast cake—we wish we had boundaries) for every occasion, this is one cake you can’t go wrong with. Plus, it doesn’t get too messy either!

Cost: And then we wonder why we’re all putting on weight when an entire loaf is at a mere INR 225. Someone save us from ourselves, please.

While we do pride ourselves on our curated selection of food, we know we don’t have the final say on the best of the best. If you’ve got an idea of who else could potentially be on this list, let us know in the comments!
