While the city has transformed, not just by name from Madras to Chennai, there are certain structures that have stood the test of time as historical landmarks of a bygone era. One of these architectural wonders is the beautiful Connemara Public Library. Right from its inauguration in 1896 it has held a special place in the collective memory and hearts of the city’s citizens.

Catering to lovers of all kinds of books, the Library was built in typical Indo-Saracenic style. What’s interesting to see is the new architectural, modern elements being incorporated into the structure over the years – Gothic-Byzantine to Rajput Mughal and Southern Hindu Deccani, as described on their site – as the building expanded to host more facilities, books and reading rooms.

High wooden ceilings and carved moldings, beautifully carved teak wood book shelves, intricate patterns and floral motifs along the pillars; walking into the library is almost like entering a time capsule. The magnificent reading hall beckons bibliophiles as the sun streams iridescent colours through the stained glass windows in patterns across the marble floors.

One of the four National Depository Libraries which receive a copy of all books, newspapers and periodicals published in India, if you’re heading to the city any time soon, this is one place you need to visit. Whether you’re a booklover or haven’t picked one up in ages, visiting the Connemara Library is truly an experience you won’t forget.

The Library is open to the public daily from 9 AM till 7 30 PM through the week and from 9 30 AM till 6 PM on Sundays. Membership is open to all citizens of Chennai above the age of 17 at the cost of INR 50 for annual subscription.
