A Glimpse Into Indian Inventor Pranav Mistry’s Artificial Intelligence Project - NEON
(L-The Poughkeepsie Journal ; R-Cnet)

Pranav Mistry is a name that is highly regarded in the world of tech, the 38 year old computer scientist and inventor from India, is a mogul in the technology industry.

In his TED talk back in 2009, Pranav was deeply interested in technology having an intuitive personality of its own rather than being subjected to as an object with no intangible existence.

Some of his work include Mouseless - an invisible computer mouse, SPARSH - ability to copy, paste between digital devices, BlinkBot - a blink controlled robot with an indispensable need to interact with gestures.

The aim of all his projects seems to be breaking the walls and redefining the lines between the digital and physical world. An effort that has been witnessed in his past projects - SixthSense and Samsung Galaxy Gear.

He is currently the head of STAR Labs, a subsidiary of Samsung that revealed a new form of artificial intelligence called NEON at the opening of 2020 Consumer Electronics Show.

NEON are avatars that look like humans. The company mentions that these are absolutely 100% visually real and are not supposed to be referred to as an AI assistant but as a friend and therefore resembling human interaction. In a tweet on NEON’s Twitter page it mentions E is for Emotions, making conversations and interactions integral.

NEON is still in development, the early demo at CES 2020 was reacting in somewhat real time, but wasn’t really building on context with questions. The demos were based on real people but their gestures were generated independently.

During the development it will be fed with human emotions until it becomes smart enough to showcase the correct emotions to create realistic renders without the need of motion capture.

Core R3 - Reality, Real - Time and Responsive, would be the software engine that will generate the graphics and artificial intelligence for NEON. The software has been recorded at the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a downloadable software for creating, viewing, editing and developing computer generated realistic looking virtual characters/model humans for being used in movies, television, augmented reality video production etc.

According to Pranav, NEONS will integrate with the human world and create a new link for a better future, a world where humans are humans and machines are more humane. Now the word humane brings extra emphasis to the previously repeated narrative of intuition.

The objective of creating softer emotions and more empathetic connections with our future digital assistants is evident in all of Pranav’s works. From intangible interactions that you feel through SixthSense to an empathetic, meaningful conversation with artificial humans through his NEON project, it looks like Pranav wants to build a world of one on one interaction with everyone including the technology that surrounds us.
