What The Other States Can Learn From Kerala In Dealing With The Coronavirus Pandemic

In the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus all over the world, we have seen various tactics employed by countries to curb the pandemic. In our own country, while the number of positive cases is multiplying exponentially, the State Government of Kerala has managed to reduce the effect of the COVID-19 by taking drastic measures like robot mask vendors, stopping a flight from taking off because of one infected patient and even floating videos of cops dancing to a Corona Anthem. Other states can take inspiration from the state of Kerala and act on it now!

I. The Flight With Patient X

Cochin International Airport officials identified a British citizen who had tested positive for the COVID-19. The flight was bound for Dubai and everyone has boarded, ready for takeoff. The officials raced to the gates and stopped it from taking off right in time. The patient was isolated and the rest of the passengers were evacuated safely. The airport was then disinfected immediately to prepare for other passengers.

II. Robots Will Save You

At public places, robots were seen carrying hand sanitisers for visitors near the entrance. This just goes to show how sensible technology can be used effectively during a pandemic going viral. The robots also had a display screen showing health guidelines issued by WHO. On asking. Additionally, the robots would answer important questions about Coronavirus.

III. Surveillance Keeps The Govt. Informed

patients who have tested positive for the COVID-19 had their phones tracked by the Government to make sure they stayed out of high-risk zones. This move was initiated when a family of three, all returned from Italy had escaped quarantine and in turn, infected more people. Their cell phones were tracked along with the 900 others who might have come in contact with them. Read more about this here.

IV. Isolation Wards For COVID-19 Positive Patients

When the number of positive cases started rising in the state, the authorities deemed it important to screen the incoming passengers at the airports and quarantine them if they were infected with Coronavirus. The Government has allotted isolation care wards outside four major airports with a 5000-bed capacity.

‘When more people from infected countries arrive in the state, we have to isolate them for a minimum of 14 days to break the chain of viral transmission. It’s not advisable to home quarantine them as the chances of risks are higher. The district administrations have already identified buildings and we can open such centres if the emergency situation demands,”
said Health Minister KK Shailaja Teacher.

Kerala recorded the first Coronavirus case in India on January 30th and has now reported no new cases. This is a big feat achieved by the State Government through the decentralisation of health education techniques. Each major bus stand was equipped with a hand wash station. Masks and other safety equipment was made available at nominal costs. Even the menu at the isolation care wards is worth mentioning. The use of technology to identify possible cases is by far the most impressive tactic to contain the pandemic in the state. We hope other State Governments will do the needful with the same degree of severity as the Kerala Government.
