Indian Musician Viepsa Arora Is A Creative Atom Waiting To Explode

What’s really exciting about the new wave of artists that are coming up in the Indian music scene is the fact that they aren’t afraid to experiment, they don’t constrain themselves to a genre and they are trying to come up with their own niche. We at Homegrown, particularly, love these shape-shifting artists who are redefining the way we consume music. Among those is Viepsa Arora, a New Delhi-based multi-genre composer, producer, singer and songwriter.

In the past two years that the musician has been in the music scene, she has been able to prove her chops as a pop artist, whether it be her debut single Careless Creature which came out two years ago or her latest Hindi-pop and R&B single Aane Do with rapper-creator Dev Raiyani. Her music is eclectic and boundless with inspiration drawn from alternative, bedroom pop, dream pop, Indian indie and hip-hop.

Her process, much like many new-age artists, proves to us that you don’t always need a 20x 15x10 ft studio to create music and can bank on your own skills as a producer. Sometimes she cooks up tunes on her laptop at 2:00 am at her parent’s house in New Delhi, other times she records voice memos in the middle of a lecture or while travelling on the metro.

What is really intriguing is that with each song, Arora reveals more of herself in the form of personal stories woven into calm, soothing melodies decorated with harmonies that symbolize the layers of her narratives. Relying on her instinct when it comes to songwriting, she revealed in an interview, that her songwriting process was “...kind of like a Frankenstein experiment.” It is perhaps both her ability to evolve as an artist and her ease with being vulnerable that sets her apart. As she continues to experiment with her sound to let her art speak for itself, we can’t wait for what she’ll do next.
