Homegrown Picks: 6 DIY Indian Fashion Labels That Are Doing It Right
Bringing their own independent visions to the world of fashion, these avant-garde designers create something more than haute couture and pleated dresses- their style is distinct and particularized, catering to a world of fashion that is accessible, different and inspired. Here are our favourite picks of Indian fashion brands that are doing it right :
I. BLUR
II. BHANE
Bhane is a traditional Punjabi word that I read and wrote down. It means the rising sun. As I saw it more and more, I liked it. I like that people can say it however they want, I like how it sounds weird. We are also a brand that doesn’t do logos.
“Live Simple. Simple live.”
Fashion Labels
Keep  simple thoughts, live easy and make the garment inherently good in terms of quality. Enjoy your life and the moment you live in.
III. NORBLACK NORWHITE
We realised the importance of meeting the source and learning the history of these practices. We wanted to document and tell stories, and textiles happened to be the format we chose to do so.
Fashion Labels
Our design aesthetic comes out of the places we’ve lived in, traveled to and the people we’ve met along the way. Even when we were growing up in Toronto, we would wear our mom’s shawls, and enjoy mixing Indian textiles with our Toronto wardrobe.
IV. CIRARE
Originally, I had started Cirare as a clothing label – I came up with two collections but I realised that was absolutely not where my heart was! Don’t get me wrong, I love clothes, I still get clothes made for myself from tailors etc. but making them for others is a different ball game altogether. With accessories, I have a different level of freedom of expression, I can play with prints I love, shapes I love and I certainly don’t have to conform to any trends or fads as such
The process of starting an independent label, wasn’t easy, however.
I remember – for what seemed like an eternity – that I was actually scared to start out, and kept putting it off – taking the first step but with so much free time on my hands and the fact that I get bored really quick, I knew that I had to just dive in.

V. HUEMN
HUEMN is not for those who want to create an identity and image with the looks that they choose, but for fashion products that seamlessly translate the aesthetic values shaped by the sum total of experiences in a person’s life. It is sophisticated, easy-wear clothing for the self-assured.

VI. SNEHA ARORA
One fine day I quit my well paying job just a week before my appraisal.
This phase wasn't easy for sure. I spent months bugging my friends with my questions and confusions, contemplating about the future to agonising extremes. It took a lot of courage to quit and start afresh, there were plenty of setbacks, there still are, but it is satisfying knowing that you are doing something you love
Fashion Labels
We like to recite a ladylike twist to masculine silhouettes. Staying true to our obsession for androgyny, the label addresses its clothes to young inspiring, self dependent women. A combination of classic bodies with avante- garde detailing, structure with flowy drapes, and modernity with a vintage twist, we just love combining contrasting elements to create ‘love forever’ pieces .
