Telangana Heat Wave: Woman Cooks Eggs On Searing-Hot Floor

A woman dressed in a light blue sari crouches over the scorching porch outside her house in Karimnagar, beating an egg mixture in a bowl. Pouring the contents of the bowl onto the floor, the searing hot ground cooks the eggs as perfectly as a frying pan. No need for a stove, fire, gas cylinder or chulha. Two spatula-flips later she has a well fried omelette, cooked off the scorching floor. This video, shared by the news agency ANI, points to the alarmingly high temperatures currently gripping the southern state of Telangana.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heat wave warning on April 13 in Telangana, as mercury recordings soar between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius. According to an official report, so far the scorching sun has claimed 35 lives in the state and 66 across the country. This heat wave has begun to grip various other parts of the Indian peninsular including Andhra Pradesh, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Odisha and pockets of Karnataka. A statement issued by the IMD noted, “Dry weather is likely to prevail over the state with most places likely to record maximum temperature between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius.” Telangana’s Nizamabad recorded the highest temperature at 45 degrees Celsius on April 16.

A senior official recently remarked that the Telangana state government has issued alerts to all districts to take precautionary measures to minimise the impact of the prevailing weather conditions. As Deccan Chronicle

reported, residents of the state have resorted to carrying a few onions in their pockets to stay cool. They believe that onions kept in their shirt of trouser pockets help stabilise body temperatures and protect against heat strokes.
