Sajid Wajid Shaikh's Art Creates A 'Canvas' For Our Own Judgements And Perceptions

Gulbahaar Kaur

Based in Mumbai, India, artist Sajid Wajid Shaikh captures stories through merging unique mediums such as sculpture, sound, photographs and drawings. His artworks are driven by an inquisitive exploration of the human tendency to derive our own conclusions and find meaning in everything. It is often discussed how each one of us projects an alternate reality onto artworks that simply act as a blank canvas of our own judgements and perceptions. The young creative takes this idea forward by forming artistic creations that are abstract and distorted.

They are meditative reflections of his own standing in life, an amalgamation of the unique personal experiences and a sensorial response to his surroundings. He is inclined towards experimenting with the narrative space by allowing for new interpretations. Sajid is inspired by German and Abstract expressionism that value freedom of imagination and hence allow for spontaneity in design. This lead him into investigations that are not limited by a particular theory, and in the process help him in building a story to be read and interpreted by the viewer.

His recent artworks showcase an intersection of art and mechanics, in the form of "alarm bell headphones for the deep state". The conceptually driven design presents an open space for the viewer to engage and immerse oneself in a discovery. The sensory experience indulges the audience and allows them to participate in the final output. The artist seeks to elevate the mundane into fine art and questions the traditional connotations of art by presenting an alternative use for objects. Hence exploring the idea of absurdity and randomness, by breaking away from the normative ways of viewing art.
