A Tryst With Tiger-Spotting In Maharashtra

Payal Mohta

If you are even remotely interested in wildlife, you would agree that there is nothing as magnificently overwhelming than sighting a big cat. Whether you have seen them virtually or been lucky enough to spot them in their natural habitat, there is grace about their ferocity that keeps you transfixed, every-time. If you’re looking to relive this experience or want to explore the wild for the first time, The Bamboo Foret Safari Lodge is perhaps, the right place for you. Nestled on the fringe of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR); one of India’s 47 tiger reserves, it is just a 90-minute drive from Nagpur airport.

Far from the rut of city life, this eco-luxury lodge allows you to be one with nature, without compromising on comfort. Supporting eco-friendly architecture at its best, the lodge with its chalets, villas and bungalows is designed to camouflage with its green environs. Located at the edge of the scenic Lake Maasal (a haven for bird watchers) with an abundance of trees, it also sees many winged visitors of various shapes and hues flitting past, throughout the day. Though the most exciting part of being a guest at The Bamboo Forest Lodge is a safari to TATR, Maharashtra’s oldest and largest National Park, organised and managed by the Forest Department of Maharashtra. Spread over 1,773 sq. km, thick bamboo forests and verdant flora has made it an untamed playground for animals like, sloth bears, dholes, leopards, Indian gaur and the most popular, the Royal Bengal Tiger. In search of these wild cats, your journey will begin from Kolara gate (the closest entry point to the forest from the resort) in one of India’s first battery operated luxury safari vehicles - the zero environmental impact jeep leaves no pollution, while you explore the diverse flora and fauna of the forest.

If you are skeptical about your chances of spotting one of these ferocious felines, keep your hope up, because the reserve currently has over 100 tigers, one if the highest in India. “Since we opened doors in 2015, 97%-98% of our guests have seen tigers,” says Mr. Sudeep Mehta from The Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge. If you are not much of a safari person, you can also explore the area surrounding the resort which is blessed with an array of smaller wildlife. Nature walks along with the knowledgeable resort naturalists or sighting the nocturnal creatures like leopards, golden jackals, Indian hares, foxes, nightjars, and owls can also be organised on request by the lodge.

If an experience of luxurious indulgences amidst the beauty of nature beckons to you, clear the calendar for your next holiday and head to the The Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge!
