Coronavirus Isolated In Canada By Indian-Origin Doctor & Team

Homegrown Staff

A team of doctors including Indian-origin Dr Arinjay Banerjee from McMaster University and Dr Samira Mubareka from Sunnybrook Hospital in Canada has successfully isolated the virus responsible for causing COVID-19 or the novel coronavirus which has taken over the world.

While every country is scrambling around for a definite cure for the infection, these researchers managed to take the first step to isolate the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In a secure facility, they managed to isolate and propagate the virus, thus creating a source of COVID-19 to study how the virus behaves.

Arinjay Banerjee is a postdoctoral researcher at McMaster University’s Institute for Infectious Disease Research and specialises in coronaviruses in bats. He has stated that the only way to work towards a solution is to understand the behavioural pattern of the operating virus. A fellow researcher from the University Of Toronto, Dr Samira Mubareka, a microbiologist and infectious diseases physician at Sunnybrook Hospital, said that they need tools to develop solutions to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The team hopes to share its results with other researchers in order to work out the solution as quickly as possible. With the number of infected cases up having gone up to 1,65,000 world over, it is of immediate importance that the scientific community comes together to work on a solution within the shortest span of time.
