India's First Period Party - A Stigma Shattering Event Celebrating The Female Body

Period poverty in India is an issue that has to be urgently addressed. A shocking statistic that emerged after the Indian Menstrual Hygiene brand Niine Sanitary Napkins conducted a study, unveiled that 71% of girls had no knowledge of menstruation before their first period and 88% of adolescent girls are completely unaware about the health implications that might occur due to poor menstrual hygiene. The term ‘Period poverty’ is used to acknowledge the lack of access to sanitary products and basic essentials such as a functioning toilet and clean water. Red is the new green is a campaign, initiated by 24-year-old Deane de Menezes, who aims to undertake and actively tackle the stigma and taboo around period education and health.

On 28th of May at WeWork Raheja Platinum, Andheri, Red is The New Green is hosting India’s first Period Party. The schedule of events starts with a film screening and talk about ‘Period - End of Sentence’ with Guneet Monga and then moves on to a panel discussion with esteemed activists, actors, writers, and comedians such as Harish Iyer, Rytasha Rathore, and Nisha Gupta and much more. Also, the period party is a celebratory event solely dedicated to bringing about social change and awareness related to period education and starting conversation through communal introspection.
