MIRROR/MAZE Is A Delhi Exhibition Exploring Time, Perception, & Humanity's Triumphs

Disha Bijolia

Within the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, a unique exhibition beckons, 'MIRROR/MAZE: Echoes of song, space, spectre,' transporting visitors to a realm where art defies its traditional boundaries; a voyage into the profound influence artists wield over our perception of reality.

Central to this exhibition is a profound reverence for the artists and their transformative techniques. Art here is not just a visual spectacle; it's a deep connection with the human spirit. This emotional journey is epitomised by a single, poignant image; an artist pushing her physical and mental boundaries to seven deaths, a symbol of the relentless battle against mortality and the unknown. MIRROR/ MAZE compels viewers to reconsider their relationship with art and its importance in our lives. Artists serve as mirrors, reflecting the intangible aspects of our world that can be sensed, touched, or partially comprehended. Through their personal journeys, they reveal not just the meticulous craftsmanship and depth of meaning, but also their unwavering determination to confront the inexpressible through their art.

As visitors navigate through the exhibition's maze-like corridors, they are transported into realms immersed in artificial hyper-realities, painted images, darkness, and illumination. Each encounter evokes that sense of awe, beauty, and mystery that blurs reality from surreality. The creative force of these artists oscillates between labour and meditation, purpose and aimlessness, action and stillness. They draw us out of our comfort zones, taking us to unfamiliar territories and challenging us to confront difficult questions that defy easy answers.

MIRROR/ MAZE becomes a springboard for introspection, inviting viewers to explore deeper dimensions of their being. It goes beyond merely a viewing experience but rather a transforming journey that makes one more than they, in moments of profound realisation.

Established at the initiative of the avid art collector Kiran Nadar, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) opened its doors to the public in January 2010 as the first private museum of art exhibiting Modern and contemporary works from India and the sub-continent. Located in the heart of New Delhi, KNMA, as a non-commercial, not-for-profit organisation, intends to exemplify the dynamic relationship between art and culture through its exhibitions, publications, educational and public programs.

Ultimately, the MIRROR/ MAZE exhibition at the KNMA is not just about art; it speaks about humanity's triumphs, setbacks, and desires that define who we are today. It is a testament to the everlasting spirit of creative powers to transcend all boundaries and reveal truths that lie beyond the realm of reason. Visitors walk out of the Kiran Nadar Museum's intricate corridors with a renewed appreciation for the transformative power of art and the power vested in artists to breathe life into it.
