Mumbai’s New Brazilian Restaurant Is A Meat-Lovers Haven

Shireen Jamooji

While we are suckers for a creamy butter chicken or a perfectly spiced biryani, sometimes it’s nice to step out of our comfort zones and explore the wild and wonderful cuisines from across the world. There are plenty of opportunities to indulge your tastebuds across Mumbai but until now, the mysteries of South American fare have eluded us. Of course there have been plenty of half-hearted attempts at Mexican food, but tacos and quesadillas barely scratch the surface of what this amazing continent has to offer. But now, straight from the capital comes Boteco, a Brazilian eatery in Bandra Kurla Complex that is serving up delectable delicacies from the heart of South America.

After their success with two outlets in Pune, Boteco clearly felt it was time to introduce the Mumbai metropolis to a more refined idea of what South America has to offer. The new space, like its predecessors exudes an air of bohemian warmth which captures perfectly the essence of Brazil. As you sit amidst the hand-painted graffiti and exposed brick, surrounded by souvenirs and knick-knacks curated by the Vibe Design Lab it’s hard not to feel a sense of celebration.

Before even opening their extensive menu, get lost in their range of exotic signature cocktails, inspired and created to personify Brazil. A must-try is the ‘Caipirinha’ which is made with imported Brazilian Cachaca (sugarcane liquor), lime and sugar. If you’re in the mood for something with more of a kick try the 9’Er, names so for its 9 unique ingredients.

Though there are plenty of vegetarian options through their menu, their true artistry is displayed in the meat dishes. Drawing from traditional Brazilian barbeque, Boteco has a ‘Churrasqueira’ section that is not to be missed. The whole process feels like ritual, your chosen meat (we recommend the tenderloin buff steak) is brought to your table along with a searing hot slab of granite on which you can cook your meat to your liking. Season it with condiments like thyme butter and grated cassava for a truly personalised meal. Another must-try is the Escondidinho which is made with dried meat, mascarpone and parmesan cheese and a pumpkin puree, the flavours meld together seamlessly to create a dish that you’ll be craving long after you’ve left. So whether you’re a long time fan or in the market for something new, head to Boteco and experience the spirit of carnivale and a taste of something truly unique.
