Start Your Day Right With 8 Of Mumbai’s Most Delicious Pancakes

Homegrown Staff

Judging by the love we received for our earlier piece on some of Mumbai’s best waffles, it’s safe to say that our readers love breakfast goods as much as we do. So we thought we’d keep up the momentum and bring you a piece on that other much-loved breakfast star: pancakes.

We know people who could eat pancakes every day of the week—if it wasn’t so much damn effort to make them, that is. But why slave over a hot stove attempting to get your batter just right (sans lumps, correct pouring consistency, not too eggy…you know the drill) when you can simply visit (by that, we actually mean frequent) some of these restaurants instead?

Yes, that’s right, this is Homegrown’s guide to Mumbai’s best pancakes. Whether you like them thick or thin, with chocolate or maple syrup, with fruit or whipped cream, we’ve got you covered.

I. Buttermilk Pancakes at The Nutcracker
Sometimes, simplicity is key, and The Nutcracker understands this logic perfectly. Their light and fluffy buttermilk pancakes are drizzled with maple syrup, dusted with powdered sugar and topped with their tangy in-house jam.

What it will cost you: Who said simple is a bad thing at Rs. 295

II. Black Lentil Pancakes at Cafe Zoe

If you’re looking to explore the unknown and eat a bit healthier this week look no further. These pancakes are made using black lentil flour and come with a host of different toppings. We recommend the smoked salmon, dill, spinach and sour cream option to feel utterly indulgent.

What it will cost you: Being exotic comes with a price at Rs. 380

III. Banana and Walnut Pancake with Toffee Sauce at Salt Water Cafe

So we know it has a bad rep but we are adamant that bananas are not getting enough credit but these divine creations display them in all their glory. The pancakes are laced with chunky chocolate chips, piled with bananas and earthy walnuts with a thick oozy toffee sauce to tie it all together.

What it will cost you: Pocket-friendly indulgence comes in at Rs. 250

IV. Tiramisu Pancakes at The Table

This is what happens when breakfast meets dessert—and the result is truly glorious. The Table’s tiramisu pancakes come with mascarpone bavarois, coffee meringue, cocoa and amaretto syrup. Weep copious tears of joy, dear gourmand. You’re going to want to eat this all by yourself, so we suggest using menu cards to build a little fort around your plate to shield it from the savage forks of your fellow diners.

What it will cost you: Heavy on the pocket, but worth every penny at Rs. 630

V. Saddlebags at Social

Two words: bacon pancakes. If you haven’t already grabbed your car keys and run out of the house after hearing that, hang around while we tell you what else is in this dish. First, there are the pancakes with chopped bacon and chicken sausages. These are then topped with a sunny-side up fried egg and lashings of maple syrup. Talk about Pancakes Version 2.0, eh?

What it will cost you: This could be your last meal and you’d die happy at Rs. 190

VI. Bailey’s Pancakes at Bastian

What better way to start your day off right than with a shot of liqueur. Whether this is a decadent brunch option or an attempt at hair of the dog, these beauties won’t disappoint. Fluffy pancakes doused in Jameson Irish Cream and topped with espresso crumbles and milk crumbs, this breakfast will have you fired up to greet the day.

What it will cost you: The price of eating your alcohol is steep at Rs. 650

VII. Dixie Chicks Pancakes at Leaping Windows

Sometimes your sweet tooth needs a break and especially for breakfast a wholesome, hearty option is just what you need. Topped with barbeque pulled chicken, cream cheese and chives, these southern belles will definitely keep you going all day.

What it will cost you: More than reasonable for such a feast at Rs. 260

VIII. Cinnamon & Ricotta Hotcakes with Fruit Berry Relish at Kettle & Kegs

We at HG have made an important scientific deduction. It’s a well known fact that cinnamon is the essence of Christmas, and no one can be unhappy on Christmas, to be happy...put cinnamon in EVERYTHING. Add creamy ricotta and a compote of sweet mixed berries, drizzle with honey or maple syrup and let the contentment wash over you.

What its will cost you: Rs. 275 is pretty reasonable for eternal happiness we think.
