The Delhi Police cracks down on students of Jamia Millia Islamia holding a peaceful protest against the Citizenship amendment Act at the university campus on Sunday, 15th December. Students lay bleeding in the library and on roads and many women hid in the bushes as police stormed the university campus. Several buses and two-wheelers were set on fire in the clashes and many on Twitter - including Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia - floated a theory that the some members of the police may have been involved in the vandalism and arson themselves. The police, however, issued a strong denial.

According to Jamia Millia Islamia Chief Proctor Waseem Ahmed Khan, Delhi Police had barged into the campus forcibly without taking permission from the university authorities and wreaked havoc on the campus. They beat up staff members and students.

An injured Taj Mohammad (23), a second year student of Masters in Islamic Studies said as he lay on a bed at Al-Shifa hospital, “It was around 6-6.30 p.m. when police entered forcibly. As soon as they entered, they started abusing us. They had sticks in their hands and were wearing helmets and jackets. They threw our books. My mobile phone was on the table, a cop took it and broke it.”

Ten people have been arrested on account of the violent clashes on Sunday, none of whom have been identified as students of the institution. Those arrested are from the Jamia and Okhla areas - both of which border the university - of the national capital, police added.
