From the second you wake up and check your notifications to that late night Insta-scrolling when you know should be asleep, the inescapable web of technology has you in its grasp. Most of us spend every waking moment with our eyes glued to one screen of another and even if we want to switch off, obligations to work, friends or family mean that you have to be connected. The art of reading for pleasure was one of many offline activities to get the axe when technology took over but one Mumbai movement has devised a plan to bring it back.

The Reading Social is a series of breakfast meet-ups held at restaurants across the city where people can spend two hours with their books and disconnect from the daily grind. With the lack of distractions it becomes a simple matter to just kick back and enjoy your book. After the reading session is over there’s also an opportunity to socialise and meet new people who share your love of reading.

This Sunday, the 18th of June, they’re back with another event, this time at the beautiful Summer House Cafe in Lower Parel. Entry for one session costs Rs. 500 but if you feel like this is something you could commit to, there’s a pass for Rs. 2,000 that will allow you entry into five such events.The entry fee includes breakfast and all the profits go towards buying books for underprivileged children. So this Sunday, instead of lying in bed on a Netflix binge, get out there and enjoy your breakfast with a book.
