The French ruled over many pockets of India. Even after the British left the Indian Subcontinent, it took 7 more years for the French Colonies to unite with Independent India. The modern day picturesque lanes of Puducherry which reflect the French influence, were once an equally charming but so Indian to the roots.
The French, who were modern and advanced in every aspect than their Indian subjects, were very amused and astonished by the practices and mannerisms of the populates. The above documentary captures these customs and traditions followed, tries to showcase the daily life of the locals within few minutes. It is shot for the western eyes to experience the quaint Indian life.
These gorgeous stencil- coloured images have a dream like quality. Captured in those old days, where technology was so infant, sound was still not part of the documentary domain, these coloured images perfectly portray and convey the life of “French India”. The arrival of the European family, dutifully attended to by the locals, gives a façade of narrative, which is a largely pure and scenic getaway experience, transporting the Western viewers to an out-of-time exotic netherworld.
