“We all fail in the pursuit of our dreams. But the true killer of our dreams is not failure. It’s doubt.”

India’s cultural identity is shaped by the diverse ways people across this country express themselves. Historically, communities have entertained each other through these mediums of expression, be it art, dancing, music or sport. However, one such entertainment event stands out like no other.

‘Maut Ka Kua’ or ‘Wall of Death’ has been a long-notorious attraction in remote rural festivals all around India. For few mere rupees, you can see the stunt drivers rocket in circles across 60ft walls, throwing caution to the wind and defying gravity. It’s really tough not to marvel at the valour of these drivers, who put their lives at risk with these jaw-dropping performances.

“Gladiators on Wheels” is an experimental documentary short made over a one-day shoot in West Bengal’s Poush Mela by filmmaker Souvid Datta. Souvid, who grew up as a child in awe of these riders, interviewed the riders to chronicle their journey.

This beautifully shot film encapsulates the trails and tribulations of these entertainers and captures the relentless spirit needed to overcome one’s gravest fear – death. Check it out below.
