An Eco-Friendly Kerala Home Made Entirely Of Repurposed Material

Samiksha Chaudhary

It’s the era of sustainability and while you must have heard of repurposed clothing, we were yet to hear of a repurposed house. Not anymore! A Home Leftover is a home that was left by an organization which promised to economically support it and was hence created by leftover materials and in-house labour. Situated in Kollam, Kerala, the 1050 sq ft built-up area was completed in 2021 by Ego Design Studio under the guidance of lead architect Niranjan C Warrier.

A one-of-its-kind project, A Home Leftover was a project that commenced as a low-income house economically supported by an organisation on land the clients owned. Initially, the design was planned for a 1200 sq ft, two-floored residence but once the foundation was laid out, the support group withdrew from the project. With barely enough finances to finish 500 sq ft of the home, the project was left midway.

Now with the help of Eco Design Studio, the task was to retain the leftover foundation while coming up with a completely new design substantiating the need for a three-bedroom house. With minimal aesthetics of white walls complementing the wooden furniture, window frames and wooden staircase, the house has an ‘old-school charm meets contemporary minimalism’ vibe to it.

A crowd-sourced and repurposed house through and through, the house was built from leftover materials from construction sites and discarded materials sourced from building material industries by donors who were ready to support a low-income house. Making it among the only few houses ever constructed from just leftovers and affording it the name — ‘A Home Leftover’.
