Artist of the Week| Vishal Thomas

Elliot Erwit once said, “Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see, and more to do with the way you see them.” Having lived in cities and tea estates, the vast variety of subjects that Vishal Thomas has breathed life into has caught our eye, to say the least. Having assisted ace photographer Anil Kumar in Cochin, he studied Communication Design at Symbiosis. At the same time, he assisted photographer Jude D’Silva in Goa. In his last year of college, he started his own company - Lunatic Clicks. He has worked on projects for Magnum Ice Cream, Mahindra Super XUV, and Nat Geo Traveller to name a few. His dream is for people to remember him as a planter/motorcyclist, whose photographs actually spoke a hundred words.

What would you describe as your perfect day, right from the time you woke up, until you went back to bed?

My perfect day would be when I’m back home, waking up to photographing migratory birds, followed by chores in the plantation which grows horticulture, rubber, coffee and pepper. Followed by a ride on my motorcycle or jeep into the adjoining tiger reserve. And end the day with a dip in the river.

What is your first memory of exploring your medium of choice?

My first memory of photography, is exploring nature and birds with my dads camera, around the house and estate.

What according to you is your best creation yet?

My most memorable creation would be a solo road trip I did across Kerala, on my vintage ‘79 motorcycle.

What are the three things you are really into, besides your art?

Birding and wildlife, Vintage Automobiles, and Travelling.

What is something that you have always wanted to do, and really look forward to doing it some day?

Working on an international project with National Geographic.

What is that one thing, that really annoys you?

Dishonesty.
