A house is more than a house. It is a structure that bears witness to everything its occupants go through - it sees good times and bad, it sees love and loss. Even while people move on and homes becomes businesses and even turns to shambles, the stories it saw continues to be. The movie Teen Aur Aadha is one that takes this notion to heart. While the movie has a list of incredible actors playing amazing characters, the house the movie takes place in, is what links the whole story together.

People are driven by different desires and wishes during their life time and Teen Aur Aadha (Three and A Half) is an evocative movie that talks about this. It depicts the story of a house in three different eras. In the first section, the building was a school and an apartment 50 years ago and is the set for the story of a young boy dealing with the problems in middle school and is living with his paralyzed grandfather. This same building later becomes a brothel after 20 years, where the story follows a young concubine dealing with her first client who is struggling with his impotence. 30 years later, the building has become a loving home, where an aging couple discuss their life and times together.

Shot in three takes and a half take at the end, this movie is said to be an experience that makes the audience feel like a part of the different stories, much like the house it is set in. A favorite at many of the world’s best film festivals ranging London Film Festival to International Film Festival of Kerala, the movie is directed by Dar Gai, who also directed Prateek Kuhad’s music video Cold/Mess and is produced by Anurag Kashyap. After finishing its festival runs, the movies is now available for streaming on Netflix and features Zoya Hussain, Jim Sarbh, MK Raina, Suhasini Mulay, Arya Dave, Anjum Rajabali and Manmeet Pem in the lead roles.

According to Biz Asia, the movie is Gai’s interpretation of the human nature of feeling the need for love and also a need to escape. This is what she has explored through this film and is made evident through all the three tales.
