Delhi’s Jaipur House is hosting a fascinating art expo this June. Hiding Inside the Light compiles forty years of South Korean artist Kim Ho Suk’s work, presenting 83 pieces of traditional Korean art. Kim Ho Suk is a prominent figure in the South Korean art movement, having received the Artist of the Year award by the country’s National Museum of Contemporary Art, in 1999. Painting mainly in black and white, the Seoul-based artist portrays his vision of the country with a realistic approach, drawing landscapes, animals and situations of everyday life.

Although considered contemporary, his work focuses on preserving the rich history and identity of his nation. The artist uses only authentic hand-made Korean papers, and traces his scenes through the beautiful Asian method of ink washing. Kim is adept at Minjung Art, a political art movement that depicts the country’s turbulent colonial period through minimalist sketches, bucolic themes and intense social critique.

The exposition is part of a cultural exchange between the Korean Cultural Center and India’s National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), and the paintings are being showcased until June 25, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
