Indian Contemporary Photographer Brings Surreal Themes To Life With His Work

Jahnavi Shah

Images and visuals serve as a portal into the soul of the artist and the subject. Multitudes of themes and emotions can be communicated within the structure of a frame and artists across our country are experimenting with themes, form, and light to express ideas and emotion. PornSoup is an Indian photographer who has taken it upon himself to dissect human behaviour and represent temperaments and emotions with his surreal imagery. He is interested in documenting the space between motion and stillness and extracting something raw and visceral from it. This derivation has been converted into a series of portraits that host the most primitive instincts. The success in his imagery lies in taking something ordinary and real and translating it into an out-worldly visual.

PornSoup looks at himself and his work as malleable entities. He mirrors the subject matter and lets his work mould itself according to whatever it is that the concept requires it to be. He hopes for his adaptability to embody the true essence of the subject matter as he superimposes his language and imagery onto the same to produce themes that are engaging and surreal. A discourse into ideas of ‘discomfort’ and ‘unease’ had him realise that he wanted to refocus and express the beauty in the seemingly uncomfortable and ordinary. Themes of travel, fashion, lifestyle and surrealism are explored in his work. He is unafraid to explore themes like anxiety, loneliness, sexuality, anger and pain. His ability to see the beauty in the same and represent it accurately separates him from a crop of creators that simply don’t tread into the uncomfortable. His extensive travels across India, Asia and North America have influenced him tremendously. He has worked with a diversity of subjects from actors, musicians, models and everyday people and themes that he finds himself gravitating towards. A marriage of technique with authenticity define his work. As an artist, he wants to be able to introspect within himself and deconstruct his own temperament and instincts and allow his own true raw self to pour into his work. Authentic and simple can be beautiful too if one readjusts their lens, and that’s really all PornSoup is about.
