Spoken Word Piece ‘L For...’ Explains What It Is Like To Be In Love

Meghna Mathew

As someone who loves stringing words together myself, I can say with confidence that the art form of spoken word is one of the most complex yet impactful ones. Coherently putting thoughts together, and successfully getting it through to the audience is no easy feat.

‘L For...’ by Bharati Kapadia is an oral performance piece that explains the feeling of love like no other. Following the phonic strategy such as that of ‘A for Apple...’, this spoken word piece explores each letter of the word ‘love’ and goes down to its most basic nuances. Given love’s complexities and ability to shift forms, Bharati does an excellent job at capturing its essence.

“Through two performative formats –– that of the text body (text animation) and that of the human body (sign language performance), the different words represented by each of the four letters resonate with attributes associated with the word ‘love’ within the contemporary social milieu,” says Bharati.

Reclaiming love’s existence in our daily lives, ‘L For...’ is Bharati’s attempt to create spaces of joy and playfulness.

Love is not what it was assumed to be in bygone days –– it is broader, brighter and more mindful, and this spoken word piece reminds us of just that.
