The New Dadar Viewing Deck Pays Homage To Mumbai’s Love Affair With The Sea

Samyukhtha Sunil

Mumbai’s love affair with the ocean has been undeterred for time immemorial. A significant part about romanticising an ideal life in Mumbai undeniably involves the chaos of big city life that dissipates into the vastness of the sea.

To commemorate this relationship that this city shares with its shores, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated a unique public space intervention that transforms the idea of recreational spaces in the city.

The Dadar viewing deck is a sprawling arena that is spread across 1500 square meters placed at an elevation of 16 feet above the shore. What was once a stormwater outfall has now been transformed into a viewing deck that faces the magnificent Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The deck will be named after Ramabai Ambedkar, wife of Dr B.R Ambedkar. This initiative by the Mumbai government was inaugurated by Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray on 9 February 2022.
