Mumbai, Practice Yoga With Puppies At This Bandra Studio This Weekend

Doggy Yoga Class
Doggy Yoga Class

The ‘Downward Dog’ is going to take on a whole new literal meaning next Sunday, April 16 at the Tangerine Arts Studio. Lara Saluja, a yoga instructor, recently announced that her class on Sunday was going to open up their doors to all the humans, and their four-legged friends! If there was ever an ideal workout for us, this would most definitely be it. Imagine relaxing, releasing all the tension pent up over the week, while your little furry friend is right beside you, happily flopping about, doing the same.

Lara explained how she came up with the idea for the event. “I teach private yoga lessons, and a lot of times puppies, or other pets, would always find their way to their owner’s mats. They were curious, and often eased into the practice with them. It became a great excuse for humans too, to get on the mat more often! It helped strengthen the bond between them and their four-legged friend, through the renewed harmony and synchronisation of energy flow.” Strangely, yoga with your dog is apparently, already an existing practice. Known as DOGA, it isn’t just about the physical aspect — just having your dog included in your own yoga practice, enables you to observe your attitude towards yourself and all other beings. It also helps understand behaviour patterns, that arise from the mind, and helps you enhance your relationships.

Classes can be practiced in two different forms; the first being wherein the dogs are actively involved in the postures and practice, while the second is more about the dogs milling around, while the humans practice. “If the dog is little, try lifting him or her in poses like Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose I) to make your practice more challenging. In the case of a larger pooch, rest your forehead gently on his back during Balasana (Child’s Pose), or fold over them when doing poses like Camel or Wheel. You could even follow your dog’s lead when they stretch — a natural when it comes to Down Dog and Up Dog.”

On the regular, Lara practices and teaches Anti-gravity Yoga, Partner Yoga and Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow. For this class specifically, she has put together easy flows (Vinyasa) facilitating oneness, thereby teaching trust.

Considering the space available at Tangerine Arts Studio, only 10 humans can be accommodated, with their pups. Grab a spot by calling Tangerine Arts Studio on 09867369960, or emailing them at info@tangerineartsstudio. If you miss out this time, don’t fret, Lara plans to make this a monthly feature.
