Mexican food is all about heart and authenticity. As many contemporary takes on tacos and burritos you might have experienced in your jaunts around the world (and in our own country if you consider all the rotis-as-tortilla culinary experiences) few things hit the spot like a well balanced, all-kinds-of-lemony fish taco or a burrito that knows how to portion its fillings right. With so many similarities in our culinary style, and even many ingredients - there’s a place in California where our cuisines have historically merged - you’d think Mumbai might have more than a few ‘tortilla temples’ to gorge on some great Mexican fare, but that’s exactly where you’d be wrong.

Despite a huge amount of restaurateurs attempting to build empires of Mexican food, almost none hit the nail on the head, and even when they do, they just don’t last long enough to influence a higher standard in the rest. We’re looking at you, Sancho’s. We still miss you and your glorious enchiladas and margaritas.

Still, things looked up when we stumbled upon one unlikely ‘Diner’ in Bandra and their seriously good fish tacos, reminiscent of a San Diego strip. Minus the view, plus some lemon.
It Happened In New York, Bandra’s answer to a New-York styled diner experience, hasn’t been around long enough to heap up the accolades it deserves for some of its offerings but it’s time to change that. After demolishing a plate of pretty impressive nachos (think perfect portionings of pico de gallo, fresh sour cream, salsa and spicy refried beans along with in-house ‘chips’ that are NOT senor pepito out of a packet) we felt compelled to give the tacos a shot and couldn’t have been happier with the results.

The soft tortillas weren’t store bought. They were fresh and light. And the crunchy Baja fish was fleshy, fresh and coated in a fantastic batter that didn’t leak oil all over the taco. That sat atop generous portions of guacamole (made with quality avocados) sour cream, red cabbage and some zesty, lemon-forward flavours. Plus they were priced decently.

While sharing IS caring—when you come across food this good, there are no rules. Yes, there are two tacos on one plate...but trust us. After one bite of this Mexican goodness, you won’t want to split the plate (or the bill) with anybody.
