“I just wanted to bring a bit of my home back to India with me!” says Marco Crisanto, entrepreneur and owner of On The Go, the newest addition to Goa’s map of international cuisine. Having owned a restaurant in Peru before, Marco’s passion for food fuelled his dream to take it across the ocean. He visited Goa as most people do - on a holiday - and fell instantly in love. Both he and his wife, Mona, moved to Goa in a heartbeat and carried their dream with them. Given the culinary expanse in Goa, what from Burmese to Japanese to Greek, it’s a wonder that Peruvian food hadn’t already found a corner for itself. Enter ‘On The Go’ - best known for it’s freshly brewed fruit Iced Teas, healthy packed lunches and of course, Peruvian goodness.

Peruvian food caters well to the Indian palate, considering it is well spiced, and full of flavours. Some of the bestsellers on his menu include the Causa, which is a mashed potato cake filled with chicken, mayo, and veggies - our idea of comfort food heaven, in other words. There’s also the classic Spinach Pie, and the Peruvian Pollo Sandwich. If you’re not the biggest fan of Peruvian food, On The Go also offers Goan influenced items like their Chicken Cafreal Puff, or Chicken Peri Peri Sandwich.

Ceviche, a famous Peruvian dish, isn’t available on his daily menu as yet, but it is available for catering and private orders. They use a traditional recipe consisting of any white, flakey fish (like sea bass, sole, red or white snapper, mahi mahi, or basa) with lots of lemon juice, onions, garlic, red chilli, and fresh coriander and of course, a few secret ingredients. This, on the beach with a cold beer in hand - could you really want anything more?

The Empanada, which some compare to an Indian samosa, is another Peruvian special. Marco laughs, “If you are explaining what an Empanada is to someone who has never had one, then comparing it to a samosa is natural, even though it differs quite a lot. Our traditional Peruvian Empanadas consist of soft pastry dough filled with savory minced beef cooked with onions, fresh coriander, olives, raisins and other spices, shaped into half-moons and then baked. They’re the perfect snack, on the go!” When it comes to desserts, Mona makes them in the most traditional manner. On The Go features Peruvian favourites such as Suspiro Limeño, a vanilla custard made with condensed milk, and Tocino del Cielo, which is similar to a coconut caramel flan.

Another item that makes the healthy Peruvian joint a popular spot, are their Blended Iced Teas. You can pick any fruit you want, and watch it blend with their freshly brewed green or black tea. It’s still the season to soak in some sun, get sand in between your toes and peruvian fish in your belly - get to it!
