Ever wondered if all your solid waste could have a fate other than ending up in a landfill? Or even better, if it could be used to improve your wardrobe? A Bangalore-based women’s enterprise Joy At Work is making this a reality by upcycling tetra packs, scrap fabric and cement sacks into trendy lifestyle accessories like bags, baskets, jewellery, cushions, place mats, and more.
According to a report by The Alternative, the founder of Joy At Work is Devika Krishnan, who since studying ceramics at the National Institute Of Design has been part of various craft-based livelihood projects across India. She has also set up Anu, a business unit in the JanakiRam slum in Bangalore, which in four years of being established has transformed. It’s now a private limited company completely owned and operated by the women from the slum, with no intervention from Devika. Joy At Work is a similar endeavour with currently a team of eight trained women who mostly belong to the migrant worker community.
In this report Devika told I Change My City that Joy At Work is not an “NGO” but an attempt to build a “sustainable business model” along with a sense of “sisterhood” amongst the workers so they can take care of each other.
Projects like Joy At Work are remarkable citizen efforts that are able to achieve social and sustainable development in one go!
