Volunteering may seem like the last thing one would want to do on a holiday but when it’s in the Andamans and diving is a part of your everyday activities, would you really say no? Climate change is a genuine threat to our coastlines and could result in the sinking of several islands; a threat ReefWatch is fighting in an attempt to protect the rich ecosystem of the Andamans. However, they could always use a few more like-minded individuals who are willing to put in time and effort to help conserve India’s coastal lines. Apart from working directly in conservation, ReefWatch also works on educating the local community, especially the children on the same.

As a part of their voluntourism program in Chidiya Tapu, a day with ReefWatch would begin with snorkeling or diving, followed by an afternoon of helping with their current projects. These could range from educating the village kids, base maintenance, data entry from their dives, or an activity that stems from your skills or interests. Would you believe watching an early sunset was part of your ‘job’ too? Spend your evenings in their backyard, followed by presentations and informative discussions about all things marine, to help every volunteer understand and learn about the ocean. The importance of every aspect of the ecosystem is pointed out through a guided tour of the island, right from their mangrove forests to the tidal pools and of course, to their glorious coral reefs.

Their program opens up from October and requires volunteers to spend at least two weeks working along with them. Volunteers who wish to spend a longer time with them are free to do so!

If you’re interested in this opportunity, email nayantara@reefwatchindia.org or admin@reefwatchindia.org with information about yourself, your skills, interests, and of course, why you’d like to volunteer with them.
