Everybody loves a long, relaxing, scenic drive — except perhaps the driver. Unless you’re a major fan of driving, a 100 kilometers could seem tedious. Maharashtra is blessed with charming locations a mere two to four hours away. A local favourite is Alibaug, the serene coastal town, south of Mumbai. While the trip is undoubtedly worth it in the end; there’s no harm in making it easier for everyone. With that in mind, last week on October 5, the Mumbai Maritime Board awarded Maldar Dredgers and Salvagers Company a contract to start a ‘Roll in, Roll off’ (known as the Ro-Ro vessel service) from Mumbai to Alibaug, according to the Asian Age.
The entire project will cost approximately INR 150 crore. The prime focus of it is to decongest the roads, primarily the northern end of the Mumbai-Goa highway, on weekends. As a part of State Government’s Sagarmala project, the service shall add substantially to the development of coastal transport facilities in Maharashtra.
Set to launch in March or April 2018, the Ro-Ro service shall connect the Mandwa port of Alibaug to the Ferry Wharf of Mumbai. Each vessel will be able to hold 350 passengers and 40 cars aboard, according to this report by CN Traveller India. While the costs range from INR 400 to INR 500 for four wheelers and up to INR 800 for small tempos, the trip shall take 90 minutes one way, saving you a tremendous amount of time and energy. That’s not all – the service shall remain operational round the year, throughout all the seasons!
