Though India is seen worldwide as a cultural and spiritual haven, it only takes a walk down the street to realise that this artistic nature has definitely not spread into the public space. Since 2014, the St+Art Foundation has been making efforts to change that by bringing art out of the galleries and into the streets. Over the years they’ve been the instigators and facilitators of Mumbai’s most iconic street art and installations and this month, they’re back with the St+Art Festival to give the city a brand new look.
Over 3 months, 30 international and local artists set to hit the cities iconic spots like Dharavi and Bandra to brighten up some dull spaces. It kicks off on October 15 with Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra’s work at Churchgate station. This is only the first of many murals set to colour the city. A new addition to the festival is the ‘Sassoon Art Project’ walkthrough exhibition at Sassoon Docks in Colaba that’s set to kick off on November 11.
The most notable exhibit from their Delhi edition was the Lodhi art district and they hope to recreate some of that magic in Mahim East stretching towards Dharavi and making it India’s second functional street art district. There will be many familiar names on their roster including Sameer Kulavoor, Daku, Guido Van Helten (Australia), Tan Zi Xi (Singapore) and Clemens Behr (Germany).
