Every country has a gimmick. It’s what their tourism board thrives on, it’s what travel websites online throw at you through bright advertisements, and it’s what every itinerary suggests you make your whole trip around — France’s Eiffel Tower, Dubai’s Shopping Festival, Spain’s Tomatina Festival, and more. Japan’s Cherry Blossom festival is only one of the country’s many attractions but let’s be honest, it’s one heck of a strain on the common man’s wallet. Yet, unknown to a majority people in India (and in fact, the world), we’ve got our very own Cherry Blossom festival right here in Shillong.
Shillong hosted the first cherry blossom festival only last year, in November. This year, the capital of Meghalaya will play host to the festival again. According to an article by CNTraveller, the festival is being organized by the state government, along with the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. 3,000 saplings were planted around the city in 2015 in an effort to observe the tree as well as look into the possibility of transplanting varieties from Himachal Pradesh.
Besides the cherry blossoms, the festival will engage with tourists through their cultural entertainment. It’s no secret that Shillong is known for its rich musical history, which makes for an ideal distraction for tourists. There’s something for everyone here!
