As mountains of accumulated garbage (especially in tier - I Indian cities) continue to pile up, civic authorities and citizens alike are looking for solutions to the pressing problem. An inevitable result of technological development in the country, electronic waste or e-waste has also been adding substantially to this seemingly insurmountable mound.

If you’re looking to put a number to the issue, The Hindu reported that India was the fifth largest producer of trashed electronics in 2016. A solution that, thus, lowers the generation of e-waste, if not eliminating it entirely, is indeed the need of the hour. Bengaluru is the third largest producer of e-waste after Mumbai and Delhi, and generates 37,000 metric tonnes of electronic waste every year.

In this scenario, two Bengaluru-based NGOs have taken the lead to reduce the quantity of e-waste generated in the city famously known as India’s Silicon Valley. Saahas and Environmental Synergies in Development (Ensyde) have installed 12 e-waste drop-off boxes in post offices and Bangalore One centres, according to a TOI report.

In a span of 10 months, they collected 4.4 tonnes of waste electronic items, and ‘recovered 306 kg of metals and diverted 26.34 kg of toxic metals from landfills,’ reported The Better India. Taking their project up a notch, they have now installed Bengaluru’s first e-waste bin on CMH Road last Saturday. The e-waste collected by the bin is recycled.

Huge amounts of e-waste mixing with landfill is a problem in itself, since the former is non-biodegradable, and often, a source of harmful effluxes. The e-waste bins shall segregate discarded electronics at the source, thereby preventing this enormous problem.
