More Than Good Food – A Mumbai Cafe Where You Can Buy Everything You See

Imagine walking into a restaurant for a meal and walking out with not just a doggy bag full of leftovers, but also a set of plates and a painting, and maybe even the receptionist’s chair. No, this isn’t an attempt to encourage the shoplifter in you, it is just us trying to acquaint you with the unusual concept behind one of Mumbai’s newest pan-Asian restaurants — Plum.

Plum is a tad bit overwhelming at first glance, with pops of bright colours and opulent pieces of furniture that are almost too much to take in. But once you’ve gotten used to the sheer number of quirky pieces of decor, you finally begin to notice and embrace the whimsical beauty of the individual pieces on display — from blue eye-shadowed pandas peering at you from the surface of your plates to the horses threatening to charge towards you through the “plum” coloured walls.

Bent Chair in collaboration with First Fiddle Restaurant introduced Mumbai to this one-of-a-kind dining experience. Perfect for the new-age fast-paced Indian, Plum allows you to shop while enjoying a delicious meal. “For the millennials, the experience of eating out is beyond food. They want the right ambience, décor and Instagram-able stories on a plate,” said Priyank Sukhija, founder of the retail restaurant.

Bent Chair is a home decor startup that was founded by Natasha Jain. Plum is this online furniture store’s attempt at venturing into the offline market and subsequently expanding their customer base. The carefully curated pieces of furniture sold at Plum are priced at INR 5,000 and above. “The experience of buying Bent Chair products at Plum Café is completely unique because there is no separate section for retailing and dining, but everything happens over a table with food and drinks. Being an online player, it was a different opportunity for us to connect with customers, where the concept is not only new, but the whole set-up is too. Since our products have niche customer base, retailing in a restaurant has given us an opportunity to introduce our products to new customers,” said Jain.

Plum’s plush decor and unique concept aren’t the only reasons behind the large number of loyalists the restaurant has managed to garner in a short span of just seven months. The restaurant strikes a commendable balance between an ambient experience and good quality dining. “Love it when authentic Asian flavours are not tampered with much and Plum by Bent Chair does exactly that. The service was good and so was the overall hospitality. Plum serves Asian dishes inspired by various parts all over Asia and the presentation for every dish is unique and eye-catching,” reads one of the restaurant’s reviews.

Plum is the place to go if you’re on the lookout for an exciting dining experience coupled with some good ol’ retail therapy.
