Study Abroad – 6 Fantastic Scholarships All Indian Students Should Know About

Regardless of what our line of interest or academic paths may be, we can attest to one truth - education is expensive. I’m sure a lot of us would also like to travel overseas for further studies, to be trained in particular skill sets that the country may not offer, but the fear of student loans and debts keep us from taking the plunge and applying. We at Homegrown have put together a list of a mixed bag of scholarships - some offered by the Indian government in affiliation with other countries and others by private institutions.

I. Commonwealth Scholarships for United Kingdom and New Zealand

This scholarship is aimed towards students from Commonwealth countries, who would after their higher education would work towards the development of their home countries. It applies for masters and doctoral programs and is eligible for a range of institutions across the United Kingdom and New Zealand , such as School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The fund covers tuition, maintenance and travel fees.

II. External Government Scholarships

In affiliation with the Ministry of Higher Education, the governments of China, South Korea, Israel, Japan, Italy, Mexico, and Sri Lanka have formulated scholarships. This is for students wishing to study at educational institutions in these countries. They range across a variety of fields and degrees. For example, the Chinese Government Scholarships applies to both undergraduate and post-graduate studies in various fields of study for students who have scored a minimum 60 percent overall. They need to have adequate knowledge of China’s culture and need to undergo a one year study of Chinese language.

You can get specific information on these scholarships on the Ministry of Higher Education website. They post periodical updates and information regarding deadlines as well.

III. Adobe Women In Technology Award

This is an internal scholarship within India. It applies to women already pursuing a formal technology program, such as a Bachelors in Technology or an Integrated Master of Science or Technology program at an Indian University. The award covers the remainder of the tuition fee of the course, as well as a summer internship program at the Adobe office. You also get the opportunity to be mentored by a senior leader at Adobe, as well as a fully funded trip to the Grace Hopper Conference in India, an event that celebrates women in computing and technology.

IV. Chevening Scholarships for Masters to the UK

The scholarship facilitated by the government of UK offers fully funded study for one-year Masters program, and includes travel, tuition cost as well as maintainance. As their website states, “Chevening provides fully-funded scholarships, leaving you free to focus on achieving your academic goals and enjoying the experience of a lifetime.”

V. Inlaks Scholarship

The Inlaks scholarship by the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation is applicable for postgraduate studies in a range of colleges in North America and Europe such as Imperial College, London, and Sciences Po, Paris. It is applicable for fields except for Engineering, Computer Science, Business Studies, Medicine, Public Health, Fashion Design, Music and Film Animation (with certain exceptions). It offers up to $100,000 in aid.

VI. Orange Tulip Scholarships

This is an umbrella scheme by the Dutch government specifically targeted towards Indian Students. It is offered by various universities such as Groningen University, and the capacity and specific degree requirements vary according to the institution. In addition, Grantfinder is a very helpful tool to know about various financial schemes for international students wishing to study in the Netherlands.
