We live in a beautiful era of advancement and innovation, with young Indians taking charge and changing the landscape of the cities they live in with grit and determination. However, there still is a part of the country that has produced immensely talented and driven individuals, who are bringing about a creative revolution — the states of the north-east.

It is only in the recent past that these states are being acknowledged and celebrated for the sheer richness and diversity, in language, culture, cuisine and even flora and fauna that they offer to the country and its people. The region has also produced a talented bunch of musicians, artists, designers, and professionals from all walks of life who are paving the way for many young aspiring creatives.

One such initiative spearheaded by talented young Indians is Devoid The Art Unknown. Devoid is an art exhibition that aims to explore and redefine the current perception of art in India. The exhibition has been organised by a group of eight young Indians from Manipur, who are creative professionals across fields Laishram Meena Devi, Zaurin Zane Thoidingjam, Thokchom Sony, Kenny Ngairangbam, Naresh Meetei, Heisnam Shantanu, Seonath Wakrambam and Vibhash Ph. “We would also like to inspire in any way we can - the future generations, to pursue Art if that is what they aspire and not hesitate when it comes to taking a step forward and looking at art as a career choice. Many people still consider art as something that cannot be pursued to earn a living. We want this show to be an ice breaker for these pre-existing notions.”

“People in Manipur have hardly any exposure to art except from old traditional painters, people have no clue about other forms of art such as art installations, the use of mixed media and other such creative mediums that have become popular in the recent past. This makes people underestimate the potential of art as a viable profession. They think there is no scope,” said Thokchom Sony while speaking with Homegrown about the initiative. “We are trying to inspire students and young creatives who want to take up art as a profession. We want to make them aware and better informed. We want to acquaint them with the actual reach and popularity of the industry. At the same time, we have tried to integrate social messages in our works that will be on display,” he added.

An installation inspired by climate change, digital collages exploring fantastical realms, illustrative storytelling, pieces made using resin crystals and moss from Dzukou Valley, art inspired by Lennon’s work Devoid has something for every art-lover.

Date: February 8 to 10, 2019.

Time: 10 am to 8 pm.
