With February comes Valentine’s Day — a reminder of pretty much everything that’s ever gone wrong in our own personal love lives. Remember that childhood infatuation that still makes you feel unbelievably stupid? Or your first heartbreak that made you want to abandon your lifelong quest for (romantic) ‘love’? Or the first sting of rejection that made you want to come home and cuddle up with a tub of ice cream and a heartwarming romcom? Of course you do.
And why wouldn’t you? After all, love sucks. It’s emotionally taxing with no guarantee of adequate return on investment. More often than not, it’s an acidic heart burn, the stench of rejection, an unrequited yearning, and a string of unkept promises. And yet, we give in the moment we get the opportunity to. But the question remains, why even bother dedicating an entire day of the year to wilted flowers, and a slew of broken hearts? Why spend our hard-earned money on giant teddy bears and overpriced chocolates? Or waste our time standing in queues outside our favourite restaurant for a romantic dinner date?
For many of us, Valentine’s day is nothing more than a flood of bittersweet memories that we’d give anything to get rid of — would we really? There’s obviously a lot to hate about Valentine’s Day—A LOT— but hey, there’s a lot to love about love, too, right?
So go home (alas, it is a weekday), grab some good food and cuddle up with your favourite romcom on Zee Cafe.
