One of the greatest challenges of living in Mumbai is certainly the commute. The trains are crowded, the roads are jammed, and in a city so big, walking around can only get you so far. In yet another attempt to get rid of this perpetual hurdle, Mumbai, it seems, will soon be home to its second sea-link connecting Bandra and Versova.
Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court gave the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) permission to cut down a significant portion of the city’s mangroves in order to begin the construction of the much-awaited Versova-Bandra Sea Link. Once the construction is completed, the infrastructure is expected to reduce the 90 minute travel time to 10 minutes. The bridge will have eight lanes to accommodate the large number of vehicles that travel between Versova and Bandra every day. Considering how ambitious this infrastructural project is, it’s not surprising that a renowned Italian firm will be responsible for the development of it.
Studio Fuksas, an international architectural firm, recently released their render of what the Versova Bandra Sea Link might look like upon fruition. The firm released an image and a video on their Instagram. “The Versova Bandra Sea Link is the Studio Fuksas proposal for a sea bridge starting from the Bandra end of Bandra Worli Sea Link and terminate at Versova, in #mumbai. The sea link will be located approximately 900 meters to 1800 meters from the coast, with a lenght of approximately 10 kilometres”, read the caption.
As breathtaking as it looks, it’s obvious that the design hasn’t been finalised yet. This is only a proposed render. But going by the existing magnificence of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, we’re really looking forward to what this one has in store.
